Attic Red-Figure Amphora, Kleophrades Painter:
Dionysus and Maenads

Note: An amphora (a "carry-both-sides"=two-handled jug) was used to store and/or transport wine or olive oil. The special shape of this amphora is known as a Panathenaic Amphora, since this type was awarded as a prize to victors in the Panathenaic Games. The painter, known as the 'Kleophrades Painter' after a cup now in Paris signed by its potter, Kleophrades, is known to have worked at Athens between around 505 and 495BC.
